Homemade Tomato Sauce

Hi everyone! I am so excited to be bringing you my homemade tomato sauce recipe. It was highly requested! I don’t think people realize how EASY making your own sauce is and so it seems really intimidating. I’m here to tell you it is easier than you think with only a few ingredients! I always make my own tomato sauces and lately I’ve even been making my own dairy free “cream” sauces too. I think you have to make your own tomato sauce if you’re Italian right?! It’s like a requirement haha.

Homemade Tomato Sauce

  • Servings: 5-6
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive OIl
2-3 Garlic cloves, minced or grated
1 medium onion, chopped
1 Tbsp tomato paste
1 29 oz. can tomato puree or crushed tomatoes
1/2 tsp dried marjoram
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp dried sage
1/2 tsp dried parsley
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
Salt and pepper to taste (I always eyeball it)

1. Heat oil over medium-low heat. Add onions. Cook until onions become translucent and soft.
2. Add garlic and tomato paste and cook 1 minute.
3. Add tomato puree or crushed tomatoes. Add all the herbs and red pepper flakes.
4. Salt and pepper to taste.
5. Simmer on low for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
6. Pour over your favorite dish!

I love this sauce because it’s a little bit spicy. I love spicy food but Joey doesn’t so most times I just add a little red pepper flake to mine. If you don’t like spice, you can just leave the pepper flakes out. If I have some, sometimes I’ll add fresh herbs. That’s not always realistic so most times I just use dried. My mom adds a can of whole tomatoes with her puree and squishes them up in the sauce to add a little texture. That’s really yummy as well! I hope you love this recipe!

XO, Gabby
